In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

  • Another Teenage Angst Movie

    By RobMSF
Alternate scenes of teenagers screaming hysterically like silly juveniles with scenes of a mother and daughter arguing with one another, and conclude with a totally cliche “there’s no place like home” ending, and you have this movie. Boring and pointless.
  • One-dimensional

    By Bruno Taut
Overrated. The female lead is rather unsympathetic, her relationship with her mother quite implausible, many dramaturgical weaknesses. I expected more in view of the hypes. Saoirse Ronan shows a one-dimensional idea of her character. So: Just two stars.

There is no substantial purpose for this movie. Waste of money.
  • Just ok

Not worth the rental. Can’t believe it has a 99% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

    Loved it
  • Really Uneventful

Wow! That was really...boring. It sure as hell wasn't a comedy. Not funny, not exciting, and not deeply moving - just meh, with numerous uncomfortable, unpleasant moments.
  • Too expensive, not a comedy, hard to comprehend

The characters feel completely alien to me. Their emotion seem incomprehensible. And the whole financial situation seems weird. How could someone owning a house and working double shifts as a psychiatrist be poor?
  • Amateur and boring

Hard to believe this was an Oscar candidate. Not a bad film, but not a good one either. Ordinary story, no real sense of direction, amateur directorial work. I was looking forward to a nice mother-daughter film, but find myself bored. (I am the mother.) A couple of episodes show the mother daughter relationship nicely, but that’s about it. Glad I rented it and did not waste money going to a movie theatre. If you want a great mom daughter film, “bad moms two“ was a great pic.
